Stains or lentigines: Treatments to remove them

Discover what blemishes are, why they appear and what are the most effective treatments to eliminate them, unify your skin tone and restore luminosity, uniformity and freshness to your face.

The spots or lentigines are pigmentary alterations of the skin characterized by the appearance of small dark areas, generally brown or brownish. They are usually flat, with defined edges and appear in sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, neckline and arms. Although they are often related to aging, they can also appear in young people due to genetic factors or accumulated sun exposure. These spots are caused by an excessive production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Lentigines are benign, but many people seek to remove them for cosmetic reasons, as they can give an uneven or aged appearance to the complexion.

Lentigines appear mainly due to prolonged and repeated exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, both from the sun and from artificial sources, which causes melanocytes – the cells responsible for producing melanin – to work excessively. This overproduction of pigment accumulates in the skin and generates visible spots. In addition to the sun, there are other factors that favor their appearance: natural aging of the skin, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, use of certain photosensitive drugs and sun damage accumulated over the years. All these elements cause the skin to lose uniformity and show spots that can intensify if adequate sun protection measures are not used.
